Hi, i've been considering a yerf account for awhile but im under the impression getting accepted isnt a easy task. If I could post a sample from my older stuff to get some honest opinions and maybe critiques to whether or not I have a chance?

Hello there... [26 Jan 2006|11:00pm]

Greetings. I've never applied to Yerf before (I pretty much seem to just bop around lost in my own world) but I've heard quite a bit about it and had been looking around before things went down. With things coming back online I've been wondering if I should give applying to Yerf a try sometime in the future. Thing is, I tend to do rather toony anthros with my medium of choice being colored pencils. Also, the majority of my drawings are for a comic I do online - time issues and all that. *blush* But I do do backgrounds. More often than not, yes I do.

I highly doubt I'm Yerf quality but I thought I might stick my head in here, say hi, and post some of my work. Hopefully that's okay. I've never quite done this before so please don't hurt me too much.

The Ghost - (14x17 Bristol board | Prismacolor markers | Crayola color pencils) An upcoming scene from the current storyline of my comic. The first time I've tried to draw a ghost-type figure. Unfortunately, the background seems a bit off - the angle of the floor is too severe looking.

File 0 - Page 20 - (9x15 Bristol board | Prismacolor markers | Crayola color pencils) A page from the comic, chosen mainly for the backgrounds. Around this time I'd been drawing Westminster Abbey for a while and was getting tired of it. Luckily after this page the setting changed to an alley and an abandoned warehouse. Course, five pages later I'm now tired of drawing abandoned warehouse backgrounds. I tell ya, I'm just never satisfied. :P As for poor Roderick's (the yellow hound) fur color the only excuses I have are limited funds and limited Prismas. Though the yellow has grown on me over the last few months.

Ratigan Tarot - (9x12 Bristol board) And here's a plain inked image. My fiancé thought the idea of a tarot portfolio would make for interesting prints. Unfortunately I became rather busy with things and only three images have been finished at the moment. This is one of them.

Ram Seer Magic - (8x10 | Pencil) And something not comic related for once. I've been wanting to redraw this in full color but haven't been able to find the time yet. Maybe someday. He was a fun one to draw and my first attempt at a ram character.

And... I suppose that's all. Thanks in advance. :)

With the return of Yerf, I've been debating whether I should try to apply again (5th time the charm?) once the applications are open again. And, well, since I remembered I was on this community, I thought I'd post my more recent stuff here. Maybe I might be ready this time? I don't know, but here goes. Please be gentle :)

Marah~Fae - Drawn on 4x3" bristol board...the size of a conbadge, but..it's not a conbadge ;) I mucked up the reaching hand a bit, and now that I've seen this piece again, I think I could've done her bending leg much better...funny how it seems "normal" whenever you're inking/colouring it.

Declaration of Love - Still an unfinished piece, but I thought I would include this here, since it has two characters interacting with each other. I do plan on putting a background on this one :) Done on 9x12" bristol board.

Playtime - Done on 9x12" bristol board, was a commission I had gotten from Anthrocon 2005.

Silverwuff and Heather - Another commission I had gotten from Anthrocon 2005, done on 9x12" bristol board. Personally, I think the sky and the water needs working on...

The Bard's Song - Done on 9x12" bristol board...Personally, I've got three nitpicks about this one: the sky looks flat (no gradient), the tree looks like it's got a giant watermelon instead of leaves, and the bard's tail is coming out of his cape rather than from him O.o;;

Anyways...that's some of my better stuff. Let me know what y'all think :)

Since I'm pretty sure my current app will be rejected whenever the site gets back up 100%, I figured I should start looking for stuff to apply with next time.
Sooo... hit me. :D

100% digital piece. I don't do these often, but I am rather fond of this pic. Not sure if it's too 'simple' to apply with though. The lack of shading on the character was intentional.

http://solfire.com/yna/artists/Growly/triximemories.jpg
Some bad anatomy errors, but detailed background with full backstory and all that nice stuff the Yerfy people look for. Even if I don't think I'll get in, I'll still probably apply with this, because either way, it's good to get that harsh criticism so I can know how to improve next time.

http://solfire.com/yna/artists/Growly/queenofthemoosenew.jpg
This is an older piece, I will admit, but it's still one of my favorites. Were I to apply with this, I would get a better scan definitely.

http://homepage.mac.com/growly/sketches%20April%202005/penumbrasketchSMALL.jpg
I plan on turning this into a finished piece with digital color. Think it would be good to apply with, once finished?

More of the same, another sketch I wanna turn into a finished piece. Going to use real media (colored pencils) for this one.

I have an image I'd like to do but I'd like to get a couple references- I'm looking now but not having much success. Anyway, I was looking for a frontal reference of someone running. Can anyone help me find a good one? It'd be greatly appreciated :D

I'm doing some sketches- some character creating etc- Just the normal question- would any of these make good app. pieces?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/wagtail_sekirei/wagtail1.jpg
This is just a sketch, based on this myth I like a lot... I might ink it up- but I don't think I'll spend tons more time on it, unless people think it might be good for an application.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/wagtail_sekirei/desert.jpg
A colored pencil piece- I imagine this might be too pin-up-y? What do other people think?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/wagtail_sekirei/ferret.jpg
This is just another one, I think it would be too much to include both this and the previous piece- which to people like better, if either at all for an appliction?

Thanks so much for any and all input!

Sooooo....guys! I haven't actually posted any art stuffs here yet...since I'm not applying until I actually have time to draw good stuff consistently. But, I thought I'd ask a little question about backgrounds. I know the Reviewers are big on backgrounds, expecially "not backdrops" and "not symbolic" backgrounds, and I'd like your thoughts on this sketch/picture of mine (It's not an app piece, I just wanted to know for when I do apply):
Thingy! (over 200k)
It has a background, of sorts. ^^; But I'm curious, is this sort of background good, or is it too backdrop-ish (since the characters are obviously not interacting with the background)?

...and, y'know, any other thoughts anyone has. ^^ I do love feedback.

Thanks guys!

Second-time poster! [10 Oct 2004|12:14pm]

Hi, everyone... I haven't applied yet, but I'm gradually gathering the resolve to do so.

I've showed my art here before, but I think I've improved some since my last post, so please humour me and look again!
I don't think any of these pictures were posted in my last appearance here, but forgive me if they were...

1. Johann - Done on bristol paper and coloured with crayolas.
2. Let's play - I'm rather proud of this, though something kind of looks off to me. I can't figure out what, though... And I don't know if that qualifies as a satisfactory background. Somehow I don't think it does...
3. Heaven is on the way - I wouldn't use this picture to apply with, but I wanted to include it here anyway.
4. The hunt is on - I did this without a reference, which is why the anatomy seems a bit wonky, especially the paws.
5. Leopard - Just to show that I don't only draw canines... This is rather sketchy looking and I wouldn't apply with this, but I still kind of like it.
6. Griffon - Birds are definitely not my strong suit... But this is one of my more eye-catching pieces, because it actually has a kind of a background.
7. Below the Border - I'm not sure what to say about this one... I know the reviewers wouldn't like the fact that it's cropped, right? This was coloured with markers.
8. Pilot - I do pieces like this from time to time, with the polygonal selector in photoshop. Do you think something like this would be good to apply with? If I made one that wasn't a head-shot, I mean.
9. Omg robots - This is an example of a full-scale digital piece... I spent over 9 hours on this, which seems like a lot to me. I should work on spending more time on my art, I guess...

Any input is appreciated... As well as honest answers to this question:
Do you think I have a shot at acceptance?

Thanks for your time...

Hiy, for awhile I've wanted to one day apply to yerf. I however, don't think I'm ready yet...so when I saw this community I was pretty happy, because now I can work twice as hard at becoming better! I'm not really going to post my art site, since I don't update it.. So here's my devart account. Any feedback would be welcome (;

A question about content [29 Sep 2004|02:40am]

jakkal
[ mood | curious ]

I'm currently working on a picture of a werewolf attacking a werefox. Well actually it's in the preliminary stages, but I wanted to ask anyway cuz it got me thinking. This will be a pencil drawing, something I rarely do anymore, so I thought it might make a good application piece (If I ever decide to).

But I know violence as far as 'gore' goes isn't allowed. But in the picture I'm working on, the werewolf has pounced the werefox and is about to bite, so there won't be any blood in the picture, but it will be dramatic and violent. I draw a lot of pictures like this (mostly for my comics) and if I do get in yerf, I would need to know this anyway. I figured you guys are the best bunch to ask :)

So I guess my question is, how violent is too violent?

Yerf worthy? [23 Sep 2004|06:16pm]

Hm, I'm overdue for a reapply, but I don't have much just yet to apply with. I would like your opinion of the following pieces, though.

http://us.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Ethanketernan/tied_ethan.jpg

Most recent.
Prismacolors and acrylic on bristol, it's my character and the white lines are supposed to be symbolic representations of her assorted "issues" (minor autistic tendencies, anorexia). She's supposed to be that skinny, reallly. :-0

http://us.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Ethanketernan/wysiwyg.jpg
This is rather old, almost a year. However I want to redo it larger. See anything grossly wrong with it?
Watercolor and gouache on hot press watercolor paper.

This is a t-shirt idea. uhh... critique, please.

It'sa matter of style. [23 Sep 2004|02:40pm]

So. So so so so.

I'm a new-ish digital artist using openCanvas 3 plus. I enjoy drawing in a sketchy-but finished style, often with limited color schemes and color bleeding outside lines... and I can't help but think Yerf wouldn't like it. I think that it might look lazy to them, rather then the intended (stylish) even though they actually take a long time because I'm just using openCanvas, not photoshop, and the tools are an umentionable word to get working desirably.

Please give me your opinions. Here are prime examples. I don't intend to apply with either of these, BTW. I know better.

Arf! [10 Sep 2004|05:34am]

[ mood | artistic ]

Howdy yall. I've been thinking about applying to yerf for a while now off and on, and I think maybe I'm ready to try. My art, like everyone elses, has lots of 'happy mistakes' that I'm sure the feds crits will pick up on. No worries, I'd just rather not apply with stuff that will for sure give me the boot. In any case, I asked some of the people I know what they think about my art and what I should apply with. As you can imagine I didn't get much help. I, unfortunately, got the standard "You're a sure thing" and "It doesn't matter what you apply with". Heh. .. heh.. right. I'd like some honest input here, so that's why I'm posting.

I understand the yerf app rules about file sizes and watermarks and stuff, so don't worry about that. I'll be sure to resize these and remove my watermarks before I apply.

First I'll start with the two that I'm most likely going to apply with:

Morning Trek - Just as a warning, this is a big file, like 300+k. This was my most recent photoshop painting. It's probably my best painting ever, so it's a definite, it's goin' in the app... unless of course yall think otherwise.

Serenity This is another big file. These are characters from my comic. I wanted to make it ... kinda cartoon like (like in the comic) but with a realistic flavor. I don't like the clouds. This pic also demonstrates a problem I've had for years -> shading. While I really like this pic, and I think it's detailed pretty well, I think the flaws in it will hurt my chances. But then again, this isn't about what I think.

Okay, now here's the maybes:

The Princess of Makalu - It's a headshot! Oh no. But it's also one of my most detailed paintings. It's a maybe because it's a headshot, and they're looked down upon. But I'd like to think I made up for it in some of the details.

Absolute Corruption - BT #11This is the cover of Issue 11 for my comic. Lots of people like this, but again it's got it's problems. But it's not as much of a headshot as ol' Mak is. Look at that cheesy lightning and lack of red reflection in the shirt. Bad enough to keep it out?

Lore onna Rock- It's that character again! Oh look, I can do traditional work. Hey, check out that BG-wannabe.

Inner Demons- So you take an RP character, possess him, and then physically alter him to fit the demon within. And what's that demon? No, he's not a mexican hairless, he's just a werewolf that wants to show off his hot werewolfian muscles. The anatomy is bad on this one, and it might as well be a headshot. But look at how cool that BG is! :P

Anyway, that's pretty much all I've got. I do have some better PS paintings, but they've got humans in them. Well really it's the same werefox character that I've shown in these other pics,... she's just, yanno, human.

Lemme know what yall think, and I 'preciate the help.
